DIDACTICS

Over the past three years, it has been brought forward an educational method, crowned by some lectures in the laboratories of Architectural Restoration at the Politecnico di Milano.

At the heart of these meetings was the connection with other professionals, the dynamics of the restoration site and the operating procedures of a conservative intervention.

The dialogue with the students showed the importance of a discussion among the operators involved and the comprehension of the practical aspects of the different procedures which constitute the intervention of conservative restoration.
The goal of this section is therefore to provide educational materials representative of the different intervention techniques, in order to thoroughly understand the aspects related to the manual skills, distinctive feature of the restoration and conservation operators, and the operating procedures, determining factor to create the background needed to face in a reliable and regulated restoration. The video clips show the operational phases as they are described in the operating instructions of the quality manual.

DUOMO PULITURA A VAPORE

Intervention site: DUOMO Roman column in black serpentine marble
Technical intervention: cleaning by steam blasting
Description: after the treatment of the surfaces with a detergent based on ammonium carbonate and EDTA, the surfaces were steam-cleaned, facilitating the removal of previous wax-based treatments that covered the surfaces.

DUOMO PULITURA AD IMPACCO

Intervention site: DUOMO OF MILANO Bas-relief in Candoglia marble
Technical intervention: cleaning by wrapping with paper pulp
Description: the surfaces were treated by applying a gel-like mixture prepared by mixing Arbocell 1000 used for complexing a preparation of AB57. After removal of the complexing mixture, the surfaces were rinsed with distilled water.

Intervention site: DUOMO OF MILANO Tombstone in Candoglia marble
Technical intervention: cleaning by GEL packing
Description: the surfaces have been treated by application of a AB57 based gel. After removal of the complexing agent, the surfaces have been rinsed with deionised water.

MICROAEROABRASIONE

Intervention site: DUOMO OF MILAN bas-reliefs in Candoglia marble
Technical intervention: surface cleaning by a wet micro-air-abrasive process
Description: the surfaces with traces of epoxy crystallized were treated by cleaning with a machine that allows the mixing of water, air and a very fine inert material (150 mesh garnet), balancing the three elements to achieve the desired effect, acting on pressure, the amount of water and inert.

Intervention site: SAN FRANCESCO DI PAOLA CHURCH - MILANO high relief
Technical intervention: cleaning by GEL pack
Description: the surfaces have been treated by application of a AB57 based gel. After the removal of the complexing agent, the surfaces have been rinsed with deionised water by using nylon brushes.

Intervention site: SANTA MARIA AL PARADISO CHURCH - MILANO internal surfaces
Technical intervention: various– stratigraphic assays and cleaning tests
Description: before each intervention it is customary to investigate the surfaces searching for the different layers, repaintings and morphological aspects of the constituting materials in order to optimize the proposed intervention and to ensure a fair economical balance between the estimate and the final work. The preliminary tests constitute the optimal handbook approach to a conservative restoration.

Technical intervention: grouting and reconstruction work
Description: the paste, made with marble powder and natural hydraulic lime, was prepared during the restoration work, until the desired plasticity was obtained. Finally acting with sponges and brushes it was blended in with the original context.

Description: the surfaces which showed insoluble or difficult to reach black crusts have been treated by using a dry micro sandblasting machine, using very low pressures and a very fine inert material (aluminum oxide 200mesh).

INTERVENTI CHIESA DI SAN VITO

Intervention site: SAN VITO CHURCH – CREMIA (CO)
Technical intervention: manual plaster removal, plaster removal with pulsing engraver, plaster consolidation by injection, pictorial integration, grouting of the painted surfaces, cleaning of the plaster by micro-air-abrasion
Description: the complex intervention involved all the internal surfaces of the church and the restoration of the Romanesque bell tower. The report shows some salient steps of the intervention focusing on the techniques used and the treated surfaces.

RICOSTRUZIONE ELEMENTI ARCHITETTONICI

Intervention site: Mezzano San Giuliano Milanese
Technical intervention: reconstruction of the vestibule, by using original techniques and materials.
Description: Preservation of the ossuary, at the beginning of the restoration the ossuary appeared devoid of the prothyrium, because of a collapse due to structural failure. During the excavation the bases of the columns that supported this element were recovered. The stone elements were recovered after the collapse and were reused for the current reconstruction.
Performed intervention: an excavation was carried out to highlight the foundations of the original structure, constituted by two stone bases. Over these the two granite columns were raised and subsequently, through an accurate measurement procedure, a wooden rib was prepared to be used as a template upon which to lay the bricks. Once the masonry structure was completed, it was possible to dismantle the rib and subsequently coating and finish the obtained surface.
